Washington: Sohran Mandani was sworn in as the 112th mayor of New York City at a historic subway station in Manhattan. The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who placed his hand on the Quran. With this, Mandani, 34, became the youngest person to be sworn in as the 112th mayor of the largest city in the US.
His wife Rama Duaji was also by his side during the oath-taking. After the oath-taking, Mandani said that this position is the greatest honor and respect of his life.
Mandani's swearing-in ceremony came as New York City entered the New Year. It is customary for New York mayors to take the oath twice. The oath was taken in the old subway and later, at the municipal hall.
The oath was taken by placing one's hand on the historically significant Quran.
Machani took the oath of office by placing his hand on the Quran, marking the first time a mayor in New York has taken the oath of office by touching the Quran. The Quran used for this was a historically significant copy from the collection of the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture. The Quran, which belonged to the famous black writer Arturo Schomberg and was kept at the New York Public Library, was brought to the mayor for the oath of office, recognizing its historical significance.
The ceremony will be held at the State House. This customary ceremony was also not missed. In the second ceremony, which took place in the afternoon local time, US Senator Bernie Sanders administered the oath.
