Recognition of MBBS course at Vaishnadevi Medical College cancelled

The action followed protests from extremist Hindutva activists.

New Delhi: The central government has cancelled the admission of the first batch of M. B. B. S. course at the Shri Mata Vaishnavism Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu, amid protests by Hindu extremists demanding cancellation of admissions as most of the students are Muslims. The National Medical Commission (NMC) in an order issued on Tuesday night said that the admitted students will be provided facilities in government institutions in the Union Territories.

The Hindutva activists were protesting after 45 (90%) of the 50 students who took admission in the first batch of the recently opened medical college in Jammu division were Muslims. The admission process was based on the rank list of 50 candidates prepared by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professions Entrance Examination. The NMC's action comes at a time when Hindutva organisations have been protesting in front of the campus for over a month demanding cancellation of admission. The attackers stormed the campus and shot dead the Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Mata Vaishna Devi Temple Board, which runs the college.

They also burned effigy and submitted a petition to the Lieutenant Governor demanding the expulsion of Muslim students.

The commission says that the course is being cancelled due to inadequate clinical facilities and lack of sufficient teachers. Meanwhile, the college authorities pointed out that the college has basic facilities and the inspection was conducted when the teachers were not on campus due to the winter break. The information was received only 5 minutes before the inspection. The authorities alleged that time was not given to recall the teachers who were on leave and that this was part of a conspiracy. The authorities said that it is mysterious that the approval was given after a proper inspection by an expert team in September and found it satisfactory, but it was canceled within months. If deficiencies are found in the normal admission process, time is not given to rectify it. This is the practice of NMC. But here the approval of the course was cancelled directly
